Dark Passage (1947)
The Movie
Dark Passage, based on the novel of the same name by David Goodis, was released in the U.S. on September 5, 1947. It was the third of four movies starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the others being 'To Have and Have Not' (1944), 'The Big Sleep' (1946) and 'Key Largo' (1948). The many location scenes in this Delmer Daves movie create an atmospheric record of mid-century San Francisco. Made at the height of the film noir era, the movie is an excellent example of the genre and offers romance to boot.
The Story
Vincent Parry (Bogart) has been wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of his wife. After escaping he undergoes facial surgery to avoid recapture while he searches out the real killer, aided by Irene Jansen (Bacall), a young artist who goes out of her way to befriend him. For the first part of the movie the audience observes all from Parry's viewpoint, hearing only his voice as the camera acts as his eyes. Only after the bandages come off do we see Bogart's features, before then Parry's face (somebody else's!) is seen only in newspapers reporting the prison escape.
